Make Your Own Racks!

Post by Maineiac » Sun Dec 08, 2019 3:13 pm

Make your own racks! Your imagination is the only limiting factor. You will need to know how to weld.

Things you need:
-3/4 steel tube from Home Depot. The thickest they sell.
-2 molding pieces like the ones pictured. You’d do a wonderful job if you routered two constant radius pieces with the exact profile of you tubing. I’m a for s*%# woodworker.
-Patience
-beer
-welder

Take the sections of tubing that you have and place one end in between the two fixed pieces and bend them. Try to keep them parallel to you work surface. I’m sure someone can do an even better job than I did, using patience and skill.

Finished product. I’d say that I knocked off most of these rack ideas from Claude Stanley and DMC, so feel free to copy them.

N-I-C-E! You're getting some nice bends out of that little set up; I would have expected the inside radii would have collapsed a bit.

That's why I went with square tube; looking crude by comparison.

I'm liking that 'flat' fender too. When did you find it?

Outstanding work!

I hope I didn't exceed my authority here, but I rotated your sideways images to the proper orientation so that your viewers can better enjoy your handiwork.

Hell, I could do that once I have the skills, knowledge, aptitude, talent, tools, resources and energy. Until then all I have is admiration. Well done!

I experimented with a bunch of different materials and methods; sand in the tube, heat, etc. I tried to bend up larger than 3/4” with sand and heat, but I couldn’t get consistent results.

The fender is a Ural speed shop item; tractor supply.

It’s off a bmw 1150xx and it’s 17”. This sidecar was mounted to my 1150GS. My Ural is used mainly for winter riding now. I went with the 17” wheels all around to be able to run a car tire on the pusher and s/c, as well as run a tire up front with a larger contact patch.

Beautiful work. Did you make that Hack Fender too?
You would have customers here if you went into small production runs. Really nice and different from stock and others.

Hack fender is a 9” trailer fender from tractor supply...like $60. I think they sell a 7” fender as well, which would be suitable for a stock Ural.
