Weekend Head Lamp Project

I wanted to do this project right after I bought the 1013 Retro. Got the ducks in a row this weekend and I am very happy with the results. I don't recommend this project, unless you have confidence in your electrical skills. The project uses an aux switch controlling an aux relay to give the flexibility I wanted. The project was designed to go to normal default condition in case of a relay failure. There was some sausage making in order to get the heatsink on the back of new lamp into the headlight bucket.

A simpler way of doing this project can be accomplished by just using the brown and yellow leads that are unused in the headlight bucket and connecting them the ring lamp leads on the new headlamp. But ring lamp will always be on in the keyed ignition and parking position, which is why I opted for a more flexible relay artifice.

Cool.
Is the "Halo Effect" a running or driving light only? I see them aftermarket on a lot of Jeeps.

I have it rigged for both opinions.

I'm adding access to a schematic for this project.

Thank you for sharing, D. Your attention to detail is admirable...and in short supply.

Hi sorry to necro and old post

I’m thinking to install something like this on my MT10 that I have coming,

Is there any pitfalls or things I need to watch out for in the wiring or is there a simple way to connect it up for basic functionality ?

Yay for the Jeep style LED projector lamp! The Chinese one I bought off ebay has that same halo option. I didn't work very hard and just plugged it in to the H3 connector and tested it out. The lamp itself is so bright I can't imagine the halo would add much visibility.

It provides a nice amount of light at side angles for illuminating the deer that lurk in the ditches and edges of fields hoping to eat some Russian steel, so I have not added any sideshooter pods to turn the night into day like on other bikes and cars I have. And at the gentle cruising speeds that I run the Ural I'm not feeling as inclined to do so. Maybe 3 wheels make me somehow "feel" more secure from a deer interaction. I guess I'm less likely to wipe out, but direct impact will be a bad deal on 3 wheels as well as 2.

The other thing I did for visibility is change out the dim candle in the marker lamp to a 5 dollar reverse LED projector. It's sharp and definitely pokes the oncoming cars enough to notice that the Ural has some width to it.

Of course I don't often engage in roads that are well traveled so except for seeing deer I could run around basically just staying legal enough to keep Johnny Law happily parked or driving by thinking "what a nutcase" to ride some relic like that".
