Tuscano Urbano lap robe mods

Post by rehab circus » Tue Oct 15, 2019 5:58 pm

I stole this idea from an Instagram post by a Uralist in Germany.

I like the Tuscano Urbano R117x lap robe I picked up but all the straps to attach the thing prevents it from being as convenient as I'd like. With these changes it can be put on the bike in seconds for the 30 deg morning commute, and then taken off and stashed in the nose of the tub for the 60 deg commute home.

First off I removed the straps that usually go over the top of the tank and loop around the steering tube and replaced them with some large rare earth magnets. The stitched part is folded under and not visible when installed. The stitched squares keep the magnets from floating around. The slits were for sliding in the magnets after making the positioning squares.

A much cleaner look up top without the straps. The 4 magnets hold it in place well.

I cut out notches in the heat resistant cork panels on the "feet" of the lap robe, then stitched them and added some edge trim around it.

The "feet" now slide right over the throttle body attachment tube to the heads and are long enough to stay in place without any straps needed.

It actually blocks a lot more lower body wind now with the notched design. It pulls right off when I don't need it and takes almost no time to reattach. I hope this is helpful to anyone who owns or is considering buying a Tuscano Urbano lap robe.

Lovely idea, but immediately occurred to me wind blast could be pulling on the compliance fittings, just a thought. :-|

On my 19 the throttle bodies are bolted straight onto the heads. You may be right about any years that use compliance fittings there though.

Didn't know that, or not noticed before or forgotten. :D

You got electrical connectors and the fuel hose there tho, so still not 100% safe IMHO. Only one way to find out I guess. Image

Isn't the lap robe supposed to go in front of the head? :?

Lap robes are a scooter-specific accessory. The tailoring mods made by Eric adapt it to the unique requirements of the Ural. It would seem that having the leg portions blocking any part of the head or cylinder would invite overheating, and/or damage to the robe itself, in short order.

I have a Langlitz lap robe and used it both ways. In front of the heads still allows air to pass through heads driving heat to the rider. at -26°F the bike does not over heat. Above freezing I connect in between carbs. normally.

Tuscano Urbano R117x lap robe maybe scooter specific, but lap/ leg blankets, robes, aprons are not they have been on motorcycles around the world since the beginning. Potomac canvas used to make Police Harley lap/leg blankets. TUCANO URBANO GAUCHO TERMOSCUD R120- BMW R1200GS maybe a better fit for the Ural. https://www.urbanrider.co.uk/tucano-urb ... 200gs.html There are also some I have seen on German Police bikes that look a little different.

I'm not at all arguing about the use of a lap robe, I am merely pointing out a possible problem using this one with a flat twin which has all its vital bits sticking out sideways into the open air, just begging to be snagged on. :D

Never had an issue with my Langlitz, about 25,000K using the laprobe.
