I have a 765t that is 9yrs outdated on its maps that I loved for the price I paid years ago, then Garmin dropped all the awesome features that is has. I used a 1490lmt for a while till it was stolen out of my car because it was the only cost-effective option at the time that had CUSTOM ROUTING. I then purchase a refurb Zumo 660 since it seemed to have some of the same options as the 765t. While I've stuck with Garmin's over the years, I completely agree with you that the devices are slow and the interface take way to long to react. But I know the system and I prefer a GPS that you can control with gloves on vs trying to use a touchscreen phone.

With the TomTom have you tried to interface it with Tyre? I know it was the way to go a few years back when a friend I rode with had a TomTom

harryball, try the Furkot route planning program online. I have used it on several occasions with my tomtom with some fairly good route planning. Includes options like locating gas stations based upon your miles per tank and also locating restaurants and motels, etc.. Last summer we did a four day beer run along the Maine coast and the tomtom performed well using Furkot as the planner. The only problem was trying to figure out the transfer from the planner via my computer to the tomtom. Good luck.

Well, I cancelled the TomTom and went with the Garmin 396lmt-s. Should arrive today. In the end I couldn't get past the combined shortfalls of the website and routing tool. If they can't get that software right, I've no reason to think the unit or maps won't suffer the same neglect. Lastly, the lack of focus on the US market spooked me too. Ask a question on their forum and you get all UK answers and none of them seem to have a concept of a fuel station more than 10 miles away. Several didn't see the point in planning fuel stops.

I may or may not regret my decision. So far, Basecamp seems fine, just a dated interface, but it's from my era so I fit right in.

I still have old files saved in MapSource that is still a valid program but Garmin has stopped updated....you wanna talk about a dated interface!

Having used both Garmin & TomTom, only having the TomTom rider now, I think you made the right choice. I am going back to Garmin as well.

I'm looking forward to a brief review on the 396 once it arrives.

I've heavily considered upgrading over multiple black fridays, but the fact that my antique still works fine I just couldn't do it.

Well, good news, I received it today and after hours of reading and research, I plugged it in to charge and update over WIFI.

I plan to get familiar with it tomorrow and get it mounted on the bike so I can take it for some short runs.

I'm real interested to see how your motorcycle Garmin turns out. I tried to use a Garmin meant for a car with a custom route loaded once and it failed miserably. I could never get my custom route to load and it just wanted to take me Garmin's way. Maybe thats the 3 year old Garmin software, maybe operator error, maybe I'm cursed? Fingers crossed you have better luck!

Do you have the car or the motorcycle version (Zumo)? I've been using basecamp, I have not transferred a route yet, still trying to figure out everything else. But I will have more videos to come.

Only a select few of the Nuvi models in the Garmin line-up will take custom routes. I know my old Nuvi 765t and 1490t would take custom routes and worked sufficient for motorcycling. I now have a Zumo 660 and it takes my custom routes just fine, at times it may be a little slow to load them or difficult to "get back on track" once you detour off route.

I do have to double check the routing from Base Camp to the Zumo now and again, if you don't use enough waypoints the GPS will re-route you to shortest distance from what the route looked like in Base Camp.

I generally plot 100+/- mile legs, if I care where I go in between I add a waypoint every 20 to 30 miles and that seems to work. If I don't care where I go in the middle I don't add any waypoints. This is surprisingly simple to do in Basecamp and it transferred to the unit just fine. I have not ridden any of them yet, but it looks promising so far.

Off topic but what kind of windshield do you have? Looking to get a new one after my Turbo cracked after dropping it.
Thanks, Greg

Plexifairing 3 from National Cycle. I cut the two lower tabs off with a Dremel. Fits very well.
