spinning the idea a bit more...and how about a planetary gear set inside the drum?
That would give the space and possibility for a low gear range of a 3/1 reduction for to climb trees...
without breaking the final drive...=> obviously the sidecar drive would need another approach.
I beat you to that idea a long time ago. I have drawings/plans and calculations somewhere. I revisit the idea every once in a while.
The problem is (as always) money. And there is probably a worldwide market for a half dozen in total.

Yeah Morgan I even drew planetaries out on CAD to make sure all the parts would fit. One big obstacle is that the best market for these is for off road two wheel drive. The best I could figure, both wheels would need planetary gears. Finding gears that could be adapted to fit was maybe possible but not worth my trouble so I dropped it because manufacturing from scratch was astronomical.
I may not be good, but I'm slow.

Hello Morgan, my original idea once was to put a planetary gear set at the position of the donut. After I broke now 3 final drives I learned one lesson.... stay off from slopes with more then 25%. That is in deed a challange in Costa Rica. As soon you go off the main roads you easily hit roads/horse tracks with 40%.
Personally I would already be happy with a FD of a different reduction. Asked with a good friend specialist on gears... (He dismantled the only machine in Costa Rica that would have been capable to make those gears because of lack of work.) His comment...."no way to make single(small batch) gear sets with the actual machinery available."
