Windscreen from scratch

Post by windmill » Sat Feb 16, 2019 2:29 pm

After a year, I decided I just wasn't happy with the National Cycle Plexistar. It wiggles, squeaks, passes a lot of air around the headlight, produces a lot of turbulence, and IMO looks out of place on an M70.
I've always liked how classic windscreens perform, but they're not a good match for where the speedo and ignition switch are located. I wanted something that would sit ahead of them like a Ural, Dnepr, or vintage BMW fairings, but didn't want a fairing. The Soviet era military winter windscreen is too big and baggy looking for my taste.

Starting with a Harley springer windscreen apron, I'm making a version adapted to a Ural that is quick release. It's a work in progress, but initial testing has confirmed its rock solid, and offers excellent protection without turbulence. It matches the tub windscreen, and I think looks more natural on my M70 then the modern style of the NC Plexistar.

Still some details to attend to before finishing it, and I want to make some small removable winglets to give a little more protection for my hands in bad weather.

In the rough.

Not personally over-enamored of the semicircular edge style, but YMMV.

Certainly looks period correct.

For those who do not like the edge trim, assuming it is just that, trim, the edge can be filed smooth and polished to be optically clear with a little elbow grease.

The edging is strictly for the looks in keeping with the rest of the bike. The polycarbonate is only 1/8" thick, and is finished off, but the edging is small and unobtrusive, don't really notice it while riding.

I looked at some classic BMW fairings, but they seem better suited to a shiny Retro than a OD green M70. I figured if I was going to go with a vintage style, I might as well go all the way.
Wasn't so sure about the looks at first, but its growing on me, and more importantly works much better than what I was using.

Fairy nuff! :D

It's certainly "period" looking.

It does remind me of the old British 1960's AA (Automobile Association) motorcycle patrol fairing.

With it removed, only the clamps on the bars and the ball mounts on the headlight arms remain. Only takes a minute to install, or remove.
