I did a little research on Sachs. They do make some really nice suspension stuff. But they also serve as OEM vendors and as we all know, OEMs spec to a price point. During my research I found that some Aprilias come with Ohlins shocks. Now, that would make you think that the bike is properly equipped. Afterall, Ohlins is a designer name when it comes to motorcycle suspension. But turns out the Ohlins shocks that are OEM on Aprilias appear to be a POS. And although can be made to work properly for high performance riding with serious modification, it is not cost effective and better to simply replace the shock with a better shock. Sachs is in the same boat. They make really nice stuff and then they also make stuff as an OEM supplier. Now that Chad has confirmed that they are not rebuildable (via normal means, Jay) they are a price point shock and probably meet the bare minimum to provide rear motorcycle suspension. I would not be surprised if Ural had "CHEAPSKY" as part of their tech spec to Sachs. The next level down from cheapsky is crapsky, which is what came on my 2000 Tourist.

Well, I test rode the Ikons and was able to directly compare them to the modern Sachs shocks on my 2015 cT.
If I remember right, the Sachs are rebuildable, yes? I wonder if anyone has done it. If so, I'd be curious what the internals looked like. Guess I should poke around the web. Might be a picture or diagram out there somewhere.
Now that Chad has confirmed that they are not rebuildable (via normal means, Jay)
My suggestion to cut a Sachs shock absorber apart was solely for the sake of comparison,
not to try to rebuild one, and was made in response to your statement above wondering what the internals of a Sachs shock absorber looks like.
That’s one way to find out.

I realized that, Jay. Just poking a little fun.

I cut a Boge shock apart for that purpose. If I remember right, many of the Boge parts were plastic and had crumbled and looked like gravel in the bottom of the shock. Same with the front forks on the R100/7. At first I was wondering how gravel had gotten inside the forks and not done damage. But when I got it in my hands and looked at the other internals, I realized I was looking at what were formerly parts.

I did that evening. He might be swamped with work. I'll ping him again. He might be waiting to hear from Ikon in Oz. I have not heard much about how C19 is doing down there. That could be a factor again.

Check all of the above.

I visited Ural Pittsburgh (PA) this week who were extremely gracious, permitting me to examine and crawl all over one of their Urals, verniers in hand verifying measurements - all of which match up with final design I'm pleased to say.
The only question I have is with regard to the shock clevis bolt thread pitch. It's a M10 bolt but looking through this thread (pun possibly intended), I see references to the bolt having a thread pitch of both 1.0mm and 1.25mm. Which is correct? I really didn't want to start spinning wrenches on their new Urals in the showroom to verify.
Technical question aside, Mike P. the general manager at Ural Pittsburgh has a deep enthusiasm for the brand and shared with me some of their forthcoming expansion plans for their new location (just a few blocks away) with a Ural-centric focus. It's always good to see a dealer with an enthusiastic pro-active approach to a niche market machine.

Both are correct, depending upon the vintage of the Ural.

I've been to the factory; it's only about 5km from the NSW/Victorian border, which has just been closed again. Who knows what's going on over there...

Thanks for the thread pitch info Chad - not a problem, I'll supply shocks with grade 8 bolts to avoid getting into additional part#s/versions as long as all bolt dias are 10mm.
