Who can vouch for actual waterproof boots?

Post by Lokiboy » Thu May 22, 2014 4:19 pm

I'm looking for suggestions for waterproof boots. I mean boots that have been tested in rain not a drizzle.

I'm thinking of going with HD's FXRG-3 but the price is making me think twice, but I'll pay if they actually work.

I have a pair of Sidi's since 2005. Slush, snow and rain and they have never let water in. Stood in a foot of water for a good half hour trying to unstick a bike in a stream and they never leaked. Up until this year I have never conditioned them and I only do now because the calcium chloride used on the roads here started drying the leather out. Have two pair of Alpinestars and Joe Rockets that claimed to be water proof and all three eventually leaked.

Besides riding for 40+ years, I worked in the woods(forestry/geology) for 15(?)years and have owned lotas top quality well made professional grade boots. None out of the box were waterproof for more than a very short time. Yeah new all the "waterproof" marketed boots are seriously sprayed with silicone and will resist water for awhile but put some wear on them and 2 months later go stand in a creek or puddle(bring dry socks).
If you start with a "quality" thick leather sewn not glued boot and do your own prep you can make them reasonably waterproof. For boots I quit using mink oil, neatsfoot oil(sp?), boot grease etc decades ago and go strictly with a w@* product like SnowSeal. I work it into all the seams especially boot to sole seams and tongue to upper seams with a tooth brush then by hand massage the w@* into the leather thoroughly, then use a heat gun or wifes hair dryer to heat melt the goop into the seams/leather. For just riding in the rain the process is good for a year or so. For wear longevity and comfort I'm a firm believer in buying quality made boots and willing to pay the price but.... I DO NOT believe in ANY boot makers claim that they're waterproof, for any reasonable length of time. The longterm waterproofing and leather care is the owners responsibility.
Good luck on your search.

I've got the TCX waterproofs and they are just that. Many hours in pouring rain at highway speeds with no water intrusion. The AlpineStar waterproofs also work well. You can also buy covers for your current boots that work well. You can also wear goretex socks that will keep feet dry even when boots are soaked.

I'm currently using "used" Sidi Canyon's I paid $100 for. I think they are $350 or so new.

Just last week I was standing in a creek taking photos and my feet were bone dry after.

I've used the Bates and Belleville gore-tex army boots for years and always stayed dry as well.

I think I have a pair of Belleville's kicking around here...size 11 I think. Only been worn a few times if you are interested. I was told they were LA police issue.

Full slip on rubber boots. 100% water proof!

Not stylish for motorcycle riding though!

My Sidi Discovery have been proven, deluge rains, creeks and snows plus they are comfortable believe it or not but they are not warm in the cold. Anything Gotex should be good I trust that stuff. Although My Bro-inlaw is a mailman and has Bates Gortex boots and claims they do not stay dry.
+1 on Snowseal

I want to thank you all for the suggestions. I'd never heard of Gotex socks and hadn't really thought of leggings. Thanks again

Used to be Oxtar. Became TCX a few years back.
The Goretex MATRIX model is great.
Became the TCX X5 Goretex boot.
Made on a wider last so they fit my wide American feet.
I rode every day and have two pair.
I alternate to allow sweat to dry out 24 hours.
I have sweaty feet (bromadrisis, stinkfoot).
Boots are servicing me well.
Been through torrents, floods, slush and sleet.
My feet stay dry.

I'm on my 3rd pair of Icon patrol boots and they are waterproof. I wear these everyday, all year. These are over the ankle so deep water will flood them :( I have been looking at Forma Adventure boots for ridding only boots, I like the brown ones :) Good luck on your search.
