Heads Up!

Post by WEGUNTER » Sun Aug 25, 2019 12:57 pm

We are under a massive spam attack. I have been deleting spam posts as fast as they come in (and banning the user) since last night. All of it appears to be Russian in origin. If you stumble across a spam posting report it at once. Under no circumstances should you open one of the links with the postings or you might as well throw your computer in the pool (along with the microwave, vacum cleaner and anything else electronic).

I've nuked roughly twenty posts and banned the same amount of 'Bots since I woke up this morning. Do we get time and a half for overtime? 🤔

The attacks might be coming from haters of Russia and Russian, Soviet content. That said, the name of this site and content might be attracting some, who does not even know what this site is about or where it is located. I saw one add for ASHAN market online ordering...that market is located in Moscow. Some brain fart or boat can only advertise it for us, US users. Then, some insurances and all kind of shameless adult content.
I believe the last one I saw was in German as well.

I am not a expert now, haven't been in IT business for almost 7 years...
Is there a chance to use CAPTCHA or some knd of antispam? Or maybe let new registrations only after manual approval. Use geolocation ban if Users IP address is based in Russia if we believe attacks are coming from Russia.

I know for sure current haters of Russia are Ukraine, Baltic countries, and abviously us because of (war of political parties) fake news :(

Alex, I am not taking a dig at the Russians but majority of posts (no not all of them) I have deleted have been using Cyrillic and have links to sites in Russia. Yes you are right, it could be anybody.

Hi Bill,

Is there a way you could block Russian IP's from registering as new members? But even than spammers can use a VPN to go around IP, geolocation restrictions.
Yes, it can be anybody.
Ukraine and Belarus also use Cyrillic fonts. And the whole former Soviet Union (other 14 republics) residents know Russian language.

I google searched the last content posted here with free move website links and have found a few other websites where the same content was posted. It looks like the are getting paid per clicks (per visits).

Agree with all. Not sure how one would block Russian IP's. Trouble with that is there are a number of legitimate Russian users on the forum and I would not want to block their access.

I second the use of a tool like CAPTCHA or other anti-robot tools. I have noticed these being used by just about every site that sells things now and a few forums I've signed onto in recent years.

Appreciate your efforts, guys. It's gotta be like raking leaves on a windy day.

First thing I do is ban them. Then I go clean up the mess they left behind.
