Why should we move to Kentucky?

Post by Lmo » Mon Aug 19, 2019 3:29 am

Maybe more importantly .. .. . why shouldn't we? Thinking western, Land Between the Lakes area.

And don't tell me because the best thing to come out of Kentucky is I-75.

Hi Lew,
Why? Well LBL is a very pretty area. Paducah is near and it is a funky little town. You would be closer to Gobium. LBL is closer to the best Ural meets CRAP, FART, BURP, HUG and others. I could ride down and meet you. Maybe that should be in the why not column.
Why not. No sun sets over the ocean. No Pacific Coast Highway. Our governor is nuts but you should be use to that.
Come on over. We'd be glad to have you.
I may not be good, but I'm slow.

Paducah is relatively close to where I grew up, near Carbondale, IL.

Nick already touched on the biggest reason, though - the wealth of Uralista and Ural rallies over here!

Paducah gets 49" of rain, 7" of snow/year. About the same as here.
Will stay.

Well lets see:

1. No waiting period on gun purchase

2. No restricted gun purchases

3. No lic. or training required for CCW

4. Registration, which includes personal property tax on your veh. are about 1/4 what you pay in Ca.

5. Homes are much cheaper than Ca. (esp. in the county and not city) and property tax is lower

6. Stays green here until first frost or fall

7. Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley and Land Between the lakes has a lot to offer.

8. The people are very friendly and always willing to help.

I moved from Ventura County Ca. in 2015 after retirement to just about 10 miles south of Paducah and haven't
looked back even after my wife passed in 2018.
The summers are hot and humid but the winters aren't bad at all. A foot of snow will normally be gone in a couple of days.
This area is very outdoor active (hunting, fishing, boating, camping and off roading at LBL)

I could keep going but you get the idea.

Well, I did grow up in southern Indiana, just up the road from Lullvull, and we still have family in Indianapolis so I'm not unfamiliar with the climate.

We were/are looking at southern Indiana, somewhere along the river; Madison, Tell City, etc. (figured if we're going to give up the ocean we need to be near some kind of open water), and then it occurred to me that Kentucky Lake, etc. might be what we need. My folks had good friends in Paducah so I'm somewhat familiar with the area.

Thanks for posting the comparisons Chad, I'll have to spend some time looking through that. We're still a little over a year out (wife's retirement) before we can take the leap. It's really a drag seeing remarkable places up for sale now ... but I did realize that I see a couple of spreads that I like every week or so, so maybe ... when we're ready ... something will pop up.

Lots of great properties to be had for < $400K:

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1206 ... 6502_zpid/
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1483 ... 9381_zpid/

Guess I should start paying a bit more attention to KY 'politics'.

My wife started house shopping a full year before my Navy retirement and this gave her an excellent sense of the market and the region into which we moved. Her diligent efforts paid dividends when she found The One, as we are completely satisfied with our purchase. Of course, we were close enough (3 hours away) to our new location that we could easily scope out prospects. That will be a little more of a challenge for you, of course.
