Am I just a cheap a$$?

Post by johnR » Fri Jul 12, 2019 5:23 pm

I got a 2019 gear-up and figured I would take her in for the first service, just because. The price "parts and labor" was estimated at $568. For a filter, oils and labor that sounded pretty high. If I am being a cheap a$$, let me know and I'll go back to my corner......

Don't know if he still does it, but Gene did throw the first service in for free.
Jon Heindl did a full check out and major service for less than that. He even got a broken bolt out of a wheel hub for me. This was after the warranty.
I may not be good, but I'm slow.

I think that's a lot of money, even for a much more hi-tech bike. I let the dealer do the first service on my KTM and the only thing they did that I wouldn't have is leave out 2 bolts on the skid plate...

I think it is the dealer. I am checking now for the cost and availability of the Motul grease and oil as well as the filter. I see calling Gene for the filter.

300 mile break in service is about $30 in parts and an hour worth of labor if you diy. I go through rear tires about as often as I change the oil and am still only spending about $150 every 3k miles. Gotta remember dealerships gotta pay techs, pay the light bill and the building payment. Sounds like whoever quoted you that has had a slow month.

Yeah, I'll not pay that. I wrote Gene to get the filter and the Manuel gives all the info I need. After the Dnepr, this will be a walk in the park......

I paid $350 in Norther Washington and only because I was over due on the oil (800 miles and first place I could get it to) we had a communication breakdown and they did the initial check on it for that price (which really is checking valves, I had done the rest on fasteners)

Here after I do myself and I will re-check the valves.

Piece of cake compared to Cummins diesel (cat is better as they list more valves you can check at any given time) - I think the Cummins 1710 V12 you have to turn about 6 times.

You’re already familiar with Urals. Why would you go to a dealer just because it’s new? If you’re not screwing around with the EFI than what’s changed from your old one?

Your dealer must be related to P T Barnum.....thinks you're one of those fools he spoke of years ago.
Or....maybe he just doesn't want to be bothered with Ural work. Either way, I wouldn't let him touch my Ural, which happens to be 13 years old....and has never been back to a dealer. DIY.

What is the labor charge in your area? It's about $110 per hour at my Yamaha dealer and $140 at the local Harley dealer. And that's in the NYC metropolitan area which I'd expect to be the highest or at least among the highest in the country.

No matter what the hourly charge is... that seems like a lot of '"hours" to be doing a touch & go/feel good first service on any bike or sidecar. What the heck are they going to be doing for 3-4 hours? That's half a days workday for a dealer mechanic.

I got ya. Silly me was thinking about having a relationship with the dealer.
