Re: Deep seated noise in tappets (?)

Although it was on a much later bike, there was a semi-recent tappet failure described and diagnosed here: https://www.sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=55982 Symptoms are exactly as you describe, especially the part about the valve going out of adjustment. If it were just noise, I wouldn'...

Re: SE VA gang

Y'all are looking good, and putting us North Carolinians to shame ride-wise. The IMZ folks should be happy with the visibility of Urals here in the mid-Atlantic.

Re: Waking up two Sportsman from the deep sleep

Going for the "less is more" here. Put some carb cleaner in the tank and run a couple of tanks through before you start messing with the carbs. That way at least you'll know they are good and clean before you start adjusting.

Re: CRAP XIV WARNING ORDER

If all these new 2019+ bikes show up we're gonna have to have three rides: one for the fast new EFI bikes, one for the mainstream older ones, and a pokey one for the 650's. Last year the 650's had trouble keeping up. Or maybe have staggered starts to a mutual destination, slow bikes go first. For so...

Re: Official 2nd Generation Keihin EFI retrofit kit

This is actually a big deal, technologically and logistically. When Van and I were out there the biggest problems to a retrofit for the ElectroJet were a. a whole new harness would be needed, and b. the new EFI fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. The harness problem was really one of labor, as the la...

Re: Waking up two Sportsman from the deep sleep

Great going! Good to hear of an early success. Since you haven't ridden them in years, check out the manual "Driving the Ural Sidecar" in the sticky at the top of the forum section "Uran/Dnepr 101". There are some very valuable parking lot exercises for practicing balance on left and right turns, an...

Re: Year model question.

I'm not sure what information you're not finding about the earlier bikes. Pretty much anything you'll need to know is here on SS if you look for it. Other than the two-tone paint job and the telescoping front forks, the only other distinguishing differences between the Troika/Troyka and a Tourist ar...

Re: Waking up two Sportsman from the deep sleep

Great going! The gearbox snot might be caused by water that got in down the speedometer cable. It's a common problem. When you put it back together, put some RTV or silicone caulk in the plastic housing of the speedo cable to seal it up. Also: pictures are worth 1,000 words. Take photos of your prog...

Re: Bad valve tappet = metal bits on drain plug

Google "White cast iron vs. stellite" and the first reference that pops up is "Kennametal Stellite Delcrome® 90 White Cast Iron" ( http://www.matweb.com/search/datasheettext.aspx?matguid=ac70cb6512254c70a0382d7d9e6efb99 ). The next four references compare stellite and white cast iron for wear resist...

Re: Looking for a Ural mechanic in the Carolinas

Wow - great story! And you laid them up right for the long rest. Since it is winter and you're not in a rush to ride tomorrow, I'd suggest giving each bike the 10,000km service. Here's a 2006 manual from IMZ, the oldest one they have on their site. The 10,000km service is on page 85 in the back.( ht...

Re: Bad valve tappet = metal bits on drain plug

Ilya was pretty specific about the white cast iron, and language wasn't a factor. He mentioned it in the context of outsourcing parts, what countries IMZ was sourcing parts from, and what parts still came from Russia. He brought up the valve as an example of a part that still came from Russia becaus...

Re: Looking for a Ural mechanic in the Carolinas

+1 on what Rivers said. I think a lot depends on what kind of riding you and your wife intend to do. If it's mostly around town, not too fast, not too far, just clean them up real well, get everything working, and ride 'em. No sense spending a chunk of change unnecessarily. On the other hand, if you...

Re: Looking for a Ural mechanic in the Carolinas

Jeez - with 3 Urals to choose from I'd just ride a different one each day in rotation and you'll go 3x as long as riding 1! When the first one breaks, switch horses and keep on riding. We've got a bunch of riders in NC/VA now, one of whom (calling Tomcatfixer) just retired and has a pretty magnifice...
