Re: Theory of Riding Sidecars

The link for "How to Ride the Ural Sidecar" is in the sticky titled "Sidecar Manuals for Newbs (and old pharts too)" at the top of the "Ural/Dnepr Newbies" section of the forum I am purposely not listing the link in this thread to encourage new users to use the "Search" function here on SS. There is...

Re: Theory of Riding Sidecars

I was told by my tutor worst thing you can do is have a pillion passenger on and the sidecar empty. The CoG is very high and very close to one side of the triangle, if it goes outside the triangle (the line between the bike's tyres) you're off. Occasionally you'll see someone who thinks they'll tak...

Re: Aligning the Toe In

You just hit on one of my alignment pet peeves. The first thing you need to do on alignment is level the bike-to-sidecar strut. See the IMZ video with Sergei - first thing he does. How does a dealer do it? Same way as Sergei. Now, in reality what happens? A rider that is 200+ lbs jumps on a leveled,...

Theory of Riding Sidecars

There's been a lot of discussion recently on alignment, lean-out, riding on curves, exercises, etc. This is a chapter from a German manual called Manual for Enthusiasts of Riding with a Sidecar by the (German) Federal Motorcycle Riders Association, and translated & published by the USSCA way back in...

Re: Terrified

I suppose a guy could use a plumb bob and a bit of math to get good results too.

Re: Best Ural Tool Roll Ever?

Chad said: The hack nose is where I stow my tow rope, in a throw-bag suspended via bungee cords from D-ring anchors attached to my hack nose rack's mounting bolts. Which reminded me of the sidecar nose tool box Van and I saw prototyped out at Ural HQ for the LE +Air (2018) with the drone. We immedia...

Re: Terrified

Re: protractors, levels, etc. Every smartphone these days, whether Apple, Android, or other, has free bubble level apps available for download with readings into single degrees. Use some sort of straight edge as a base for the phone and you can read your lean-out without spending any (more) money. R...

Re: Aligning the Toe In

Your thinking is admirable, but remember that these critters have been around in their same general configuration since the 1930's. It's really best to just follow the directions, improvise tools when needed, and don't over-think it. Toe-in and camber don't take a "major tool investment" when any lo...

Re: Terrified

The Yellow Book reference is here: https://www.sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=9134 There is a whole section of parking lot exercises that will give you the feel for how a sidecar behaves, especially the balance point where the sidecar lifts. It isn't at all like a two-wheeler, so in so...

Fantastic job! You also get the sense of how the event has grown from its humble beginnings.

We're gonna have to get a bigger boat...

Re: Want to Buy: Ural Sidecar Body INDIANA

Chad - can't argue with that! Thanks for measuring. I was mis-remembering some ancient discussion on the sidecar door. An overhead shot popped up in my news feed this morning, and I tried to draw in the angle difference between the 2WD and 1WD with my stubby fingers. The bike is a 2WD, so the red li...

Re: Want to Buy: Ural Sidecar Body INDIANA

Imagine a bird's-eye view of a Ural from directly overhead. In a 1WD the sidecar wheel is not in line with the FD but is forward a good deal. A line drawn from the FD to the sidecar axle to the front axle and back forms an obtuse triangle. In the 2WD the sidecar wheel is almost in line with the FD. ...

Re: Want to Buy: Ural Sidecar Body INDIANA

(tangential to thread but answering question) I think - but am not 100% - that the door on the 1WD is different to accommodate the body being placed further forward on the frame. The 2WD axle comes at 90 degrees from the FD, so the sidecar wheel has to be farther back than with the 1WD. Look at pics...

Re: Want to Buy: Ural Sidecar Body INDIANA

What difference does year make for the sidecar body? As long as it isn't rusted, they're pretty much the same. 1WD and 2WD are different, but other than that-
