Re: Type 3 ignition diagnostic

Ok so at the bike now. I can really only find 2 things which could be considered marks on the flywheel. One which is a line stamped and blotted with white paint. Another that looks to be scribed with pencil maybe 180 degrees or so from that white blot. I'll upload photos tonight. Apparently my camer...

Re: Type 3 ignition diagnostic

This is DEFINITELY helpful information. Going to take a look at the situation right now. I can't seem to find a firing mark on this flywheel anywhere, just what I assume to be a TDC mark. I could be overlooking it, or it may be very faint or poorly marked. I was pretty thorough when I checked yester...

Type 3 ignition diagnostic

Good morning! I'm having issues with my Type 3 ignition on my 1999 Tourist. Here's a quick primer on the rig. Some of you may know this bike from elsewhere. Bought in May. Had been overhauled with a new crank just prior to buying it. I rode it about 20 miles and lost the right cylinder. I found deep...

Re: 1999 650. Only firing one plug

Managed to break a compression ring. It snapped off in my hand while I was filing it so I assume it might have had a foot out the door to begin with. Ordering a new set. IME piston rings are very brittle. The one and only time I've had to increase the gaps on any, I used a fine grindstone, not a fi...

Re: 1999 650. Only firing one plug

I am also going to order the wrist pin reamer tool they have listed. I don't know how to use it or exactly what it's for, but I think I might need it to replace the bushings Even though the kit comes with bushings, if the bushings you have are not worn out, you don't need to replace them. Happy tra...

For my wrist pin fitment I bought a 7/8 240 grit ball hone, $18. Which carbs are you ordering?
I'm going with the K65T. Russian Garage says theirs are authentic, and I'm reading they are preferable because they don't have any plastic parts to crack or fail.

I am just going to take the plunge and order the carburetors now. Since they are cheap, Ill take a chance on their cylinder base s...

Do the heads have the studded mounts for carbs?
It has Keihin carbs and obviously compliance fittings. Looking at the setup, I don't like it and the idea of having slide carbs hard mounted to the heads is much more appealing to me. The ticklers and fuel leaking doesn't bother me at all.

Re: 1999 650. Only firing one plug

There are 4 rings per piston. With the one below the pin. I just figured that out that the pistons that I was sent are of a much older design. This doesn't bother me at all, so long as they work. It's just a somewhat foreign concept to me to have piston rings like this because I'm a younger mechanic...

Re: 1999 650. Only firing one plug

OK. So these rings are for an M62. That is going to be a much older model which explains a lot. Let's get technical! So, my old pistons are in OK shape. Can/Should I go with my original pistons, Gene's Hastings rings, and these new cylinders? Should I take the pistons and new cylinders to the machin...

Re: 1999 650. Only firing one plug

Ok. Quick update. Parts arrived today at exactly 20 days. Not a bad wait at all and honestly they look great. A few questions... It came with rings. Is there any benefit to using the Hastings rings I got from Gene instead or should I stick with these? It came with matched wristpins and brass bushing...

Re: Stuff That Works

Use Mop 'n' Glo on all plastic parts. Even the ones that weren't very shiny to begin with will look great. It has an added benefit of leaving a film on the plastic which helps to keep dirt from adhering. It's a trick I learned as a kid riding quads and found to transfer well to the road world.

Re: 1999 650. Only firing one plug

You can make studs if you are willing to use a hacksaw, file and thread cutting dies. Pick a good piece of metal to start with, maybe Stressproof 1144. Best, Jeff Always an option. Even better if the threads are still good in the case when I take the old studs out. Then I can shop around for that p...

Re: 1999 650. Only firing one plug

Update to thread. Pistons arrived from Holopaw. I don't like. What's wrong with the new pistons? Happy trails, Jaybird I just don't like them. They look a lot different and the quality appears lower than the IMZ originals. They very well may be perfectly fine. For what I have the entire top end kit...

Re: 1999 650. Only firing one plug

This one is already on it's second generation.

I will likely sell it once it is running. I want a new one altogether, and it's value not running is too low and I will lose too much.
