How do you guys and gals get 30 mpg?

Postby Ural Vic » Mon Oct 13, 2008 8:32 pm

I have consistantly come up with about 25 miles to the gallon. :? My 2007 gear up I bought at the end of April has just over 6200 km on it. How are you guys getting 30 mpg? Granted thats only about 20 miles per tank before refueliing but thats a trip to work. I do a mix of highway and city driving and when I am on the interstate I cruise at about 55 to 60 mph. I have color tuned and synced the carbs. I change the oil and have 20w-50 as the manual says. Everything runs smooth though the ride is a little rougher with the new tire but it has almost 2000 km on it. Tire pressure is always checked and kept at 32 front, 40 pusher and 30 on the sidecar. I weigh in at about 225 before armored up. Any hints and tips would be appreciated.

hi speed driving costs you in fuel. 45-50 mph travel yield me about 50kms per gallon. I lose about 5kpg for every 5 mph increase after that.

Headwinds, road conditions, tire pressures ( I use 40-32-32-) and driving style all affect mileage

Yep, Randy is correct. My only addition is slower acceleration. I can get 40mpg (almost 65 kilometers per gallon) when I drive about 45 mph (70 kph) and smooth accelerations. This with 650cc Dnepr and Russian carbs!

Granted, I normally drive a bit faster and in traffic forced to get on the throttle more. I usually get around 32-35 mpg.

I rode down south a-ways, (80 miles) today, doing 65-70mph with a 20-25mph headwind. Managed to get 29 mpg for that portion. Came back at 55-60 with a tailwind and got 38mpg.

#1: Cheat on the math in computing such!

Disconnect the speedometer and you can get as many MPG as you want to believe you got.

Also, if you trailer it, you will get even better gas mileage on the trip than the vehicle you are being trailering with. To prove this, just look at your tank before the trip and then afterwards. Then look at the gas consumed by the trailering vehicle. Modern science is wonderful, isn't it?

Fact: Black 2006 Tourists are the most fuel efficient Urals. I generally get between 32 - 35 MPG and I have done very little to the setup.

my regular run back and forth to work is 110 km on the nose. I use 1.4 gallons for the trip day in and day out. Drive a route of rolling hills at a speed of 50-55 with a short stretch at 45mph.

Slowing down really does help. This past Sunday while riding around the Hill Country at our little rally, we stopped for some ice cream at Dairy Queen after climbing up the rocks at Pedernales Falls.

After UralCT parted company with Barbosa and I, my wife plugged in a great rural route back to our base camp. After we took off, about 20 minutes into the ride, I realized we should have gotten gas while we were where the people live. I asked her to search ahead for gas, of course there was none until we got back to Fredericksburg, many miles away !!

I slowed down to about 45-50 to conserve gas, I know the hilly/twisty terrain was using extra gas. Barbosa was behind me and I'm sure glad his pirate rig doesn't have a cannon on it !!

When we got to town, we stopped at the first gas station we could find. My trip meter showed 175 clicks, and I haven't switched to reserve yet. I put in 3.3 gallons of gas !

Slowing down really does help.

Howdy All,

The tour rig was run hard and put away wet every day for three months on the road this summer, covered 15,500 miles, averaged around 25-28 mpg depending on what part of the country I was riding in. The rig weighed 1,420 pounds and I rode it at 65+ mph when ever the wind and road conditions allowed it. Just some more data to consider.

Nah, with all the wildlife popping up, I'm glad we were going slow.
BTW, I pumped in 3.7 gallons at the same time Mudpie did. But I had a bit more weight and Mudpie's hack doesn't have a windshield.
175 k's = 108.5 miles. Mudpie and I averaged 31 mpg. But remember, we didn't do 45mph all the time either. That was just during the end of about a 140 mile run.

Is that 40 in the front? Guess I'll give that a try tonight and see how it handles. 32 in the rear might smooth out the harsher ride from that Dupo tire. Also will slow my acceleration. No more wheelies. :D

40 psi is for the pusher. Any much lower than that and the thing wears like a pencil eraser.

32 psi is front and hack.
