No timing marks!

Postby Ural Vic » Sun Aug 17, 2008 3:27 am

OK. After reading the forum I figured I would try and adjust my valves on my 2007 gear up. After removing the rubber cap I can't find the timing marks on the flywheel. I have rotated the engine until I could spin the lifters on each cylinder and then adjusted from there. Now I am a little worried I didn't have it at TDC. Did I do the right thing or is there something else I need to look for? Thanks for any and all advice in this matter. I hope I put this in the right section. Yep I'm a noobie! :D

I pretty much check mine the same way.
I would say the marks HAVE to be there ..somewhere.....but it is a Ural
Gonna make timing the ignition a bit difficult. :?

Hopefully you waited until the valves were in overlap as stopping when you can first spin the rods is not quite TDC.

There was a time long ago when a handful of Urals came over without timing/TDC marked flywheels. I imagine it could have occurred again. The marks are sometimes difficult to see unless, once found, they are highlighted with paint or some such brightly colored stuff.

just an update. All turned out well. It appears even that though I removed the plugs so I could turn the engine slowly, I still somehow managed to miss the marks. A purchase of a timing light helped. I was able to finally find the marks and everything is set ok. :)

As far as I can make out , on the 750 12v wolf engine I recenly installed in my M66 the timing marks are approximate 180 deg out , I just get TDC by feeling the piston with a screwdriver down the sparkplug hole

You can find TDC with an unbent paper clip through the spark plug hole. Just feel for the piston as you rotate the crankshaft by hand.

When i find the marks, i take a Q-tip and spray a little white paint into a cup and dab that paint on the arrows when i set up the bikes. Now every time it comes back to get the valves
set im ahead of the game.

Yeah, I used a silver Sharpie to mark mine, now they're easy to see as they spin by...
