Ural on the Local News

Postby Dark Knight » Sat Aug 09, 2008 1:54 am

:D

One of our areas local news anchors/reports, Ron Brown, has traveled to Russian several times and really enjoys the area. He recently ran into me on my Raven at a local parade and came up to ask me questions and share some of his own stories from his many visits to Russia.

I was surprised that he recognized what the Ural was (identifying it as a Russian bike) and I got a big kick out of the enthusiasm and obvious rush of memories that seeing the bike provided for him.

As it turns out it was one of the days where I had piled my whole family on the bike and Ron was fascinated by this. He gave me his card, asked for my phone number and requested that we get together and do an interview.

It took a little over a month for our schedules to coordinate but we finally got together this morning and shot some footage. The link below is the segment as it aired on our local ABC affiliated station. I think they did a really good job with it – obviously a lot was left on the cutting room floor… but all and all I think it came out nice. It portrayed my family and motorcycling/sidecar-ing in a very positive light.

That was great. And Ural didn't pay for this?!?!. News story? Advertisement? Whatever you may think it was... it was excellent PR that's for sure.

I really enjoyed the video. I have to admit that I had to take the 40 MPG with a bit of salt, but who am I to argue with ssomeone else's gas figures? :-) I don't think my rig would ever get 40 MPG with four people on it, let alone with just Murphy and I.

Although it works well for the individual, I'd not be riding that way as the norm. My experience with different folks riding on my pillion seat was much different than what he experiences with the extended seat he runs. Just too easy for an enexperienced rider back there to quickly change the dynamics of my Ural when they do some unexpected moving. For me, I just ain't safe aa a pilot with my pillion seat loaded down and probably all the less so with the hack double-loaded with passengers. Just me though and it is his ride choice, not mine.

Back to the original topic though. I thought the video was a very well done piece to view. Great to see them having so much fun.

Howdy Dark Knight,
I too enjoyed the video, but I must admit I had to watch/listen to it several times to fully understand everything -I'm not quite fluent in English as you all know. :(
That said, I really love your license plate !
Thanks for sharing this video however, and I wish you that next time you'll get your bike serviced for free by your dealer. This was a very good PR operation, kudos to you ! :)

Kudos to you and the family and also to your local reporters! In these parts it is a RARE event when a reporter gets the facts correct and doesn't inject a lot of personal bias to the reporting.

Great Job!

Thanks for all the comments and kind words about the story and my family. Like I said it was a fun story to do!

a1930ford,
I have seen 39 mpg on the hwy, fully loaded with camping gear for two. I regularly travel with up to 3 passengers (plus myself) and achieve anywhere from 26-35 mpg....

Scott in Shoreview,
I was surprised at the amount of time they lent to this story as well! Pleasantly surprised….

BIOtech41,
Funny thing is, she really is a Motorcycle Momma (< click for a link to her webpage) :D
