Heading to work this morning and just got off of the little section of interstate that I have to ride when I stopped at the first light. Noticed a strong scent of gasoline, and thinking it was the junker of a car that had rolled up next to me when I first noticed the smell I thought nothing of it. At the next light the smell was really strong and I was alone. Looking down (I could barely see in the dark) a steam-like vapor rising from below the inboard jug and upon closer inspection I could see gas running straight on to the warm exhaust pipe causing it to vaporize. At this point I started feeling a little panicked having seen the recent pictures of the burning Ural pictured in a few posts. I pulled off the road quickly and found a side hill that allowed me to park the sidecar below the engine letting the drip fall away from the exhaust.
Hopping off and looking down I finally traced the leak to the small fuel line running to the carb. Aparently the hose clamp had loosened and allowed the line to come partially detached letting fuel flow everywhere. So when doing your rig check-ups, everyone might want to add the hose clamps of the fuel system to their list as apparently these can become loose from vibrations also.
Be careful out there.
