Heading to work this morning and just got off of the little section of interstate that I have to ride when I stopped at the first light. Noticed a strong scent of gasoline, and thinking it was the junker of a car that had rolled up next to me when I first noticed the smell I thought nothing of it. At the next light the smell was really strong and I was alone. Looking down (I could barely see in the dark) a steam-like vapor rising from below the inboard jug and upon closer inspection I could see gas running straight on to the warm exhaust pipe causing it to vaporize. At this point I started feeling a little panicked having seen the recent pictures of the burning Ural pictured in a few posts. I pulled off the road quickly and found a side hill that allowed me to park the sidecar below the engine letting the drip fall away from the exhaust.

Hopping off and looking down I finally traced the leak to the small fuel line running to the carb. Aparently the hose clamp had loosened and allowed the line to come partially detached letting fuel flow everywhere. So when doing your rig check-ups, everyone might want to add the hose clamps of the fuel system to their list as apparently these can become loose from vibrations also.

Be careful out there.

Guess I'm going to find that new fire extinguisher to mount in the trunk tonight........

Geez! Perhaps we need a new forum of near misses and potentially hazardous incidents in order to make these things aware to us all.

Glad you're okay and you noticed the cause quickly.

Film at eleven

Postby a1930ford » Tue Aug 05, 2008 6:47 am

Come on, fellow, we need a safety video! Why don't you just cut your fuel line, hop on your rig and drive for about 10-15 miles? All the while, keep the video running. That way you can post the safety video for all to see and learn from. You know, a picture is worth a thousand words, so make us all happy and film your plight. :-) :-)

We also need a section of the video to cover what potentially happens when someone does not spot the trouble and continues to drive for miles and miles with the gasoline dripping onto the hot jugs and muffler. Yup, got to cover such issues so that everyone will have a full understanding of just how much caution they should have when operating machinery. :-) :-)

Once you make this film, if you are successful, then I am sure there will be lots of folks at this site who will be begging for a sequel or even spin offs. Once you recover from your experience in the burn ward, I am sure you will be able to oblige. Wow! You got a new career on your hands in doing safety films for Soviet Steeds, huh?.......film at eleven. :-) :-)

Huey could post a 7 paragraph message on how to keep your posts short. When he was born the doctor vaccinated him with a phonograph needle.
