My springer spaniel thinks the bike is his. Since he is a big spaniel I take out the seat and throw a blanket down to give him some traction. It keeps him lower in the sidecar. To secure him I bought a harness that goes around his chest and has a ring on the back. I found a 12" nylon lead with snap clips on both ends. One end is hooked to the harness and the other to an eye bolt in the back corner on the bike side. He can move around but is kept just shy of being able to step out. I kept telling him NO every time he tried, so now he won't try until I say it's OK. I'm at work right now, when I get home I'll see if I can find the camera and take a picture

I did the same thing as Cableguy. I found a harness with a ring on the chest that I hook the short lead from the harness to the eyebolt.

Don't forget dog goggles, it'll protect you dog's eyes from flying road debris and bugs.

My year old yellow lab weighs 70 lbs and I don't take the seat out of the sidecar. He sits on the cushon and puts his front feet on the floor, then he pokes his head around the side of the hack's windsheild.

JohnBG has some picture here of his dog harness set-up, but I'm too lazy to look for them.

Could someone post a pic of where the eyebolt is placed?

I had placed a eye bolt on the floor right in front of and in the middle of the bottom half of the sidecar seat. Then I found that the sidecar windshield bracket on the inside of the tub (bike side) works much better because allows a little longer chain for more freedom of movement without letting them get too close to jump out. I found a clasp that just hooked right through the spot where the bolt went through the little bracket. Its stout and held on by two nice sized bolts. If you plan on using your sidecar windshield like most people or don't have one - then keep whatever you use for the lead attachment closer to the drivers side of the tub.

It does take a little bit for the dog to get used to not trying to jump out with a short leash! Mine seemed to learn pretty quick that you aren't supposed to get out until told to do so.

Have fun!

Sorry Joe, I didn't get a chance to take any photos last night. If you still want them I will.

Here is how Jerry is secured. The first is him ready to go. The second is him posing to show how his harness is hooked up. The third is his harness. And the forth one is the short lead that hooks to the tub. I also toss in a blanket in to give him some traction.

Edit: OOPS I got the picture order wrong

Why couldn't one of these setups be made to work? I know they're quite popular with Jeepers: http://www.buckleuppup.com/

You could probably make such a harness work in the relatively small space available - but Uralists are usually too cheap to buy spendy stuff when they can make something work.
