k&N filter cleaning

Postby Systema » Wed Apr 16, 2008 9:27 pm

Have the K&N reusable filter in my 07 Gear Up and thought with a little over 5,000 Km I would clean it today. This was the first time I have cleaned it so it will give the new fellows an idea of how to do it. Sorry no pics...have to get my daughter to show me how to do that sort of thing in the near future.

Removed the intake hose from air cleaner to carbs and covered the carb openings with 2 clean rags.

Removed the 2 screws and air filter box lid.

Removed 2 screws and 2 lock washers and round air cleaner cover.

Filter is in plain site now, gingerly removed it. You might have to pull back rubber hoses that might be in the way.

Removed rubber gasket that seals between airbox and lid.

Wash filter FIRST with solvent in K&N kit. It is just a spray type bottle. Just need to fully wet the element part of filter. I then wrapped it in a cloth and put aside. Wait 10 minutes instructions say.

During the wait period I cleaned the airbox of all crap, pine needles etc. I also cleaned the intake fitting from airbox to carb with a clean cloth. I washed the rubber airbox to cover gasket with dishsoap and a toothbrush and dryed it off.

10 are up. Take air filter and hose it off with cool water, not too much pressure or risk damaging the element. Gave it a shake to remove loose water and allowed to air dry.

After air drying you then spray the filter element with K&N oil spray to coat the filter element. Hold it up to the light and check spray coverage. the oil is slightly red in coloou so you can see readily if you missed a spot. Wipe dripping oil off rubber gasket of filter element.

You can now install the element in reverse order.

The 2 screws that hold the air box outside cover on seemed lacking to me. I put 2 small rubber sink faucet washer on the screws before putting them back on the cover. One less spot on the bike now to wear paint from and eventually rust.

If you have never done much work on your bike this is a nice easy thing to begin with.

Note. Make sure all the hose clamps are good and snug on carb and air box. No leaks. :)

I remove the airbox when servicing the air filter. Takes an extra minute or two to remove it, but makes taking the filter out a lot and back in easier.

And keep in mind that on 2006+ models, the air is taken from the center to the outside of the filter so it is important to oil the inside of the donut, not the outside...

Removing and discarding the "top hat" makes getting the cover off easier. Be sure to seal the screwholes airtight. Also, on my rig the crossover hose was a royal pain so, having removed the tank for something else, I shortened the two bottom spigots by 1/2" and put on a long hose which routes beneath the alternator next to the fuel line to the right side carb. Now nothing is in the way of the removing the cover.

I was doing a search for air filter and ended up here. I have heard that a better flowing air filter makes a difference and would like to make my rig better :D

Which model (number?)air filter has everyone bought? I read the instructions above about removal and it seems straight forward enough for an after work before it gets dark or rains type of mod.

And the talk also discusses cleaner, which brand? And is this a cleaning kit type of thing or just a soap for a water in the bucket kind of stuff?

K&N model E-2470, buy the K&N P/N 99-5000 recharger kit with the aerosol (not spray bottle) pink oil.

More info on how to do it with pictures of the filter and cleaning kit here: http://sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=325
