What shall I wear?

Postby mapperjay » Tue Apr 15, 2008 12:53 pm

In the interest of wearing a jacket while riding, I have my old leather jacket that really needs to be retired and I need to find something new.

So, what do you all wear? Wear do you shop? What should I look for in a jacket? Fitting? Comfort (summer vs. winter)? Leather vs. that other stuff?

When riding two wheels, I always wear my First Gear leather jacket. I buy such things from Leather Up.. Here

On the rig, with much slower speeds and safer stance, I wear either the leather, when cold, or a Joe Rocket Lightning jacket, with armor.

I always ride with a helmet - here in Washington, it is required - in Indiana is wasn't and I still rode with one.

Leather Up also has good leather pants.. great for keeping wind of you and stops most road rash immediately. :)

There are a lot of different jackets around - if you only have one, make it a leather one..

I wear leather in the winter and mesh in the summer. FF helmet all the time. Heavy boots all the time, armored gloves all the time. armored pants some of the time.

by the way a well worn leather jacket is the perfect fashion statement on a Ural. Dont throw the old girl away if she can still dance.

I buy from Motorcycle Superstore. They have nice prices and the customer service has been excellent. I have a leather jacket that I can't get rid of for sentimental reasons. That being said I have the Tourmaster stuff below and can attest to their quality..

i wear mostly carhartt gear and work boots as my ural protective gear.
i used to wear crappy helmets but since i bought a higher end lid i don't think i'll ever go back to non dot crapola.
heavy gloves are important as well.

with 1 smash up on a ural and a decent speed smash up on a crotch rocket under my belt i can't stress enough. HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE.

Problem with nylon, heavy duty or not, is that it will not stand up to being rubbed over a rough road at all - it disintegrates rapidly, with bits of it melting into your flesh. For riding a rig, or bike, you need something that you can drag over concrete without it tearing.

I wear an Olympia AST year round (down to -13F so far). It's very much worth the money. The only problem I seem to have with it is the velcro on the sleeves have pretty much died. So it needs to visit the local tailor sometime.

I can also give a  about the web site LeatherUp. Gear is great quality, great prices, extremely fast shipping.

So far I bought their brown leather chaps, vest and right now I have a brown leather jacket enroute (should be here tomorrow).

Right now I'm in a brown leather phase... dunno why, maybe because it "goes" better with the G/U. I already have a full set of black leathers that are really good....

But everyone wears black..... :P

Just about anything by Tourmaster or Cortech is good stuff.

I ride with a Tourmaster Transition jacket, Joe Rocket Ballistic 5.0 pants, and Joe Rocket Sonic boots. For gloves, it depends on wx and temp. The colder and wetter rides I wear my skiing gloves. Warmer days get my leather riding gloves.

I'm ATGATT.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already found some really neat toys--err, I mean safety precautions. I'd better find my wife a jacket quick. :D

I have just returned a Nolan helmet - I wanted it because of the dark shield visor. Though it was the right size for me, it was a long way from the right shape - I could not wear it comfortably, so I am still looking for a helmet. :x

I wear a leather Buco style jacket, kinda fifties looking. I got it at Oregon Leather in Portland. I bought some leather motorcycle gauntlets with Gortex liners there also, they are comfortable year round.

I am reluctant to order things I wear on the 'net, I gotta try things on first, especially a helmet.

Like Mylash found out, correct size doesn't mean it will fit. I wanted a flip front helmet so I went to a mortar and bricks store where I could try on a lot of different makes, until I found one the fit right.

I would like to get to a real store - there aren't any round here with any selection - even the local hang out orders 'em in for you from a catalog. I don't have much free time to go into Seattle or Tacoma, so I have to wait. Until then, I will be wearing my aging Harley branded full face.
