Need advice on windshield and mirrors.

Postby Tin Man » Sat Mar 15, 2008 12:11 am

1) I am looking for a good set of mirrors to replace the stock ones. I would like them to be bigger rather than smaller so I can see behind myself a litte easier. The stock ones will not hold their position and they vibrate more than I like. I would even consider bar-ends if they are big enough.
2) I am looking for a windshield. Just wanna keep the rocks and bugs off me and maybe deflect a little wind. I am leaning towards a handlebar mount frameless style but will consider all recomendations.

Howdy Mike,
You might try a National Cycles, Dakota model windshield. A bit pricey but efficient (about $225).

I had the Dakota on my Tourist and it worked well(winter use only).

Gene has a windshield on his site that looks very similar for $175.

I have had one from Gene. It worked great. My buddy rolled his and broke his shield so we made a set from 3/16 smoked black polycarbonate. It is a little thinner than Gene's. Overall I liked the one from Gene. My friend is 6 foot tall and wanted one a little taller, but he has that proble with all of the shields.

I also have the one from Gene. Works for me, and looks good.

The vibration on the mirrors will decrease as you loosen up your motor, really. Mine were useless at certain speeds when it was new.
A good bike shop should have some different sized mirrors. :?
I think the adapters on the handlebars are a pretty common thread size. Take the bike there to make sure and so everyone can come out and gawk at it.....

I put a Ural windshield on and like it very well. I don't think the handlebar clamps will fit the present produced handlebars. I had to use different clamps and make my brackets.

You might check Rifle Windshields.

Gonna list a OEM Ural windshield for sale. Its like new, Patrol green , but would be a snap to paint, matching your Arctic. Asking 190 plus shipping.

Hiya Mikey,

I ordered the Givi Universal A620 ($127.00). Should be here in about a week.

A couple of points to consider:

1) Will you ALWAYS ride with the windshield on? If not, think about how easy/hard the shield is to dismount. Eg. the Plexistar II, also made my National Cycle, is a quick dismount: about 60 seconds.

2) Check the height of the windshield, relative to YOUR line of vision. There is a page on the Nat'l Cycle site that explains the proper "fit" of a shield. When sitting normally on the bike, your line of vision should pass just over the top of the shield. Your nose should be about in line with the top edge.

I was not aware of such things when I bought mine. As a consequence, my shield is too short, with the top edge being about in line with my chin.

As it stands now I think I will have it on all of the time. :?: If I decide to remove it for some off road adventure? :moto: , time to remove should not be a problem. :brickwall: I had a chance to sit on a Patrol with a Dakota installed and it is about right. Just wanna make sure I explore all the options prior to spending the bucks. 8)

I had the Ural windshield and discarded it with extreme prejudice as soon as I got into off road riding in a big way - way too much distortion of the view in front - It was so bad, I nearly wrecked in a deep gully I could not see directly in front of me. Now I ride without, but do intend to get something much better than the Ural offering, to keep the wind off my poor old bones. :)

I had left a message at National asking some questions and I just got a call back from a very helpful guy. I was asking about mounts and such but they have none for Ural, (yet, but I will keep workin on them), He did ask if any of ya'll have used the Dakota and which model did you get? Any help is appriciated.
As for the mirrors, still can't find what I want, the extender that came with the stock mirrors is 1 1/2 " tall and goes from a 10mm at the bottom to 8 mm at the top. The EMGO mirrors that I bought are 10mm so it looks like my best bet is to drill out the small top hole and retap it to 10mm. It will have to do at least for now. 8)

You might contact Memphis Shades:

http://www.memphisshades.com/index.html

or talk to Ken over at Storm's. He sells the National cycle brand.

Finding a Ural specific windshield might be a problem. There really aren't a lot of aftermarket accessories for them around. Many of the windshields mount on the fork tubes although there are handlebar types available.

If you had mounting hardware then Bill's Plastics in Dallas could fabricate the windshield. (214)744-1170 Life member TMRA helping bikers for 30 years.
