Anyone use a rubber ?

Postby pidgey » Sun Apr 20, 2008 11:20 pm

Seal around the trunk lid ? If so, what kind ? I want to keep the rain out and prevent the metal on metal contact. I was looking at a couple of automotive types for door and trunk but they are way too big to fit the Ural. Maybe I'd have better luck at an RV shop ?

Thanks 8)

I used a self adhesive weather stripping for windows, purchased at my local big box home improvement store.

If it wasn't so late, I'd go down and take a pic or even find the box in the garage... (it came in a big roll, only used a little)

It is D shaped rubber with the adhesive on the flat side of the D. I know, not very helpful at this point, but I'm getting ready to hit the rack....

J C Whitney has a whole lot of different profiles of window and door weather strip for restorations. Dunno if some thing fits your setup.
Maybe this:

The U-shaped stripping on my trunk lid has worn some paint away where it contacts and it seems to stay watertight with a bit of beeswax spread on the spots.
Works for me...

I just used regular hardware store stick on weather stripping and then for good measure went over that with Gorilla Black Duct Tape.

Go to Canadian Tire and in the auto section there is black molding that is sort of a squashed C shape. You get about 17 feet in the package. This works perfect for the trunk lid and lots of other stuff like the top of windscreens, gas can holders etc. The tight bends on the hack lid are tough. Have a bucket of really hot water and soak the strip in it for 2 minutes and apply quickly.

It may seem silly, but I'm ready to do this little operation. My question is do I put the weather stripping on the trunk lid or the trunk?

I'm sure it doesn't matter, but what would be best so that I'm not ripping it off.

I may be totally incorrect, but I believe it does matter a bit/smidge. Me, I'd opt for the trunk channel and not the lid. I don't know if it is how or why it all seals correctly, afterwards, but that is just my take on it. I've seen it both ways though. I suspect that in cars, the curvature of the actual rubber seal formation allows rain and such to drop off to the outside as you open a door. However, on a deck lid, you are essentially opening it straight upward, instead. Moisture would drop inside instead of running off, in my opinion, but I am only guessing and could be incorrect. As I said, I have seen it both ways. What ever floats your boat. The hardware stuff is a good and cheap place to find something that will work. Street rod sites have specific places that supply rubber channel for antique and street rods. They are prone to look and fit better, but also to cost more.

The opposing idea would be to place the seal on the lid side so as to prevent damage to the seal material from occurring while loading and unloading the trunk… (by dragging objects in the trunk over the seal surface in the process)
