My UDF Solution

Postby redflasher » Tue May 27, 2008 8:29 am

UDF can be fun, interesting, or sometimes downright intrusive. Often, we just want to get on with our ride or walk away and get on with our day. After many sessions, I came up with this partial solution. It's not original. Sometime back, JohnBG posted a link to a label/sign maker program. I have lost the link.

Pretty much like the FAQ area of a web site. Very Cool 8)
It would answer most nuisance questions. I have to admit, UDF in it's proper time is fun. Sometimes, though,
you just want to buy the Vodka and be on your way.
I think I just may put something like that on one of the ammo cans.
Maybe sub a sickle and hammer for the scull and crossed bones. :)
I remember someone over at RIMC was selling some stickers they made.
Anyone here have the hardware to do that?

I am getting odd UDF - recently a number of young mothers have brought their children to look at the rig, when we roll up - they are not apparently interested in it, but assume their young child is.

I was at a local rider hangout yesterday and experienced my first major UDF session. It was mostly the usual "what year is this?/did you restore it?/did it come with the sidecar?/how much does it cost?/ what's Why-Pan?"
The one surprising or interesting question was a guy who asked if it was a Dneper.

Nearly every conversation I had concluded oddly with "well, good luck with it." That kind of saps my confidence!

I rode my Dnepr to the local Harley store. There were some interested looks at the rig, but no one approached me. It wasn't until I was leaving and backed out of my parking space that people started pointing and asking questions.

Champion sidecars has come out with a conversion kit for HD transmissions that adds a real reverse gear not one of those starter motor reverses. The kit is $1300.00 I helped a buddy install it. The install went well it was a real good kit.Now adding a hack to a Harley could also include a real reverse just like a Ural. They also have a triple tree for sidecar use I think that is$1000.00.I'm really thinking about hooking up a Ural sidecar to a HD but I'm not sure which model.I ride a FLH Classic which I really like but I think I'd prefer a more stripped down bike for use with a sidecar. The way the used market on HD is shaping up in my area you can catch a pretty good deal on a 2 or 3 year old bike .I have no idea what the mounts would cost.

UDF is just a fact with one of these rigs. I get asked all the normal questions but I also hear that this is the first sidecar rig they have ever seen. The only part of UDF that I am not so found of is the drivers of cars taking our photo while we are going down the road and they are trying to drive. Those are moments that I would like more power. If you want UDF go buy a shopping cart of groceries and load them plus the spouse in the sidecar. Although I am a newer owner I have to say that this is a very fun and useful toy for the wife and I.

I was quoted a total of $3500 for reverse, leading link, and mounts, for fitting Ural sidecars to a Harley - It was for the Sportster in my case, but the same is quoted for other models.. This price is WITHOUT the sidecar. Ural ones are very hard to get hold of at present, and are running just short of $3000 - other brands are similarly priced.
