FD oil capacity

What is the proper amount of oil for the Final Drive?? I have a 07 Patrol and I put in 4.5 oz. I read somewhere that there is a mis-print regarding this info on the manual.

And to make refilling easier, go to your local supermarket and buy some plastic baby bottles (with caps and nipples on them). Snip the end of the nipple off, remove nipple, put in 4 ounces of gear oil (ounces are printed on the bottle), replace nipple, then invert the whole thing into your final drive. No mess at all.

Replace cap, put on the shelf, the thing stays clean unitl next use.

They typically come in packs of three, so you have a few spares !

Much easier than the measuring cup/funnel method, which ALWAYS makes a mess.....

Me, I go to the grocery store and pick up the plastic mustard or ketsup containers and pre-fill them to the amount I need for my Troyka. I bought a bunch at the local restaurant supply and the cost was almost nothing for a dozen of them. I stuck them on a shelf and then just pull out one to use for f/d or a different one for the tranny oil. Never tried the baby bottle approach, but sounds as good as my suggestion.

I bought the 3-pack of baby bottles, used the measurement marks on them and filled it to 4oz. Cut the nipple off a bit and inverted it into the FD. The bottle was stiff and I couldn't squeeze the oil out. It took too long, so I dumped it through a funnel. Also- turns out the 4oz indicated on the bottle was more like 5.5ozs and I had to drain some out, since I don't yet have a turkey baster...

I'm going to try the mustard bottles since you can squeeze them. Huey- what do you use to measure the 3.5ozs that you put into the mustard bottles?

I'll fill the other two baby bottles with vodka...

John at Heindl recommends that you use 105 ml or 3.5 oz of gear oil in the final drive for dual wheel drives. He feels 4.5 oz is too much.

Me too. I find that if I put in 3.5 oz, it comes right to the second line on the dipstick. Plenty. But I have wondered if the dipstick is correct, or if I have a Tourist dipstick...Anyways, I'm sticking with 3.5ozs.

I had a small graduated cup that was liberated from the kitchen when my wife didn't know it. The katsup or mustard bottles are not that easy to squeeze either, but the nipple on them can be cut. Mine seemed to work ok. Easy enough to put up several and stash away for use at a later date.

Fill it to where it says to in the manual. I always fill mine to the bottom of the filler hole on all my rear diff's. I've never had a shaft or oil related problem on any of my shaft drive bikes. And I've had quite a few in the last 20 years or so its best.

NO!!!! You do not fill the FD to the bottom of the filler hole!!! unless you want FD fluid all over your rear wheel hub and wheel. I just fill mine to the top mark on the dip stick with the dip stick just seated on top of the FD filler hole. Pour in a little at a time and check as you go.

I just did a fluid change and, using a 60cc syringe, filled mine with 4.5 oz/137ml. of gear oil. Brought it right to the upper mark on the dipstick.

I notice a slight bit of oily material on the FD housing. Nothing dripping, just enough to make the dust adhere. Since it's so minimal I've always figured it was just mist from the vent in the FD fill plug. :lurker:
