Left exhaust gets red hot glowing at night compared to right

Postby ComradeSasparilla » Mon Jan 15, 2018 1:12 am

Hey guys I was riding at night and I noticed the left pipe glowing at night way brighter than the right I heard the left gets hotter because of the crankshaft also I have a solo. Is it weird that the left exhaust pipe gets red hot on ural solo 2010 w/ 2600k like even white sometimes nothing compared to the right? I just balanced the carbs the right has a crack on the top branch pipe but it hasnt penetrated to the inner surface (waiting for replacement). Please If someone could shine a light on this since I feel like the bike is running pretty good and riding great.

ComradeSasparilla, never noticed my 2016 GU ever glowing. please help us out with a signature line as the Year of you bike and maybe where you are located. my pipes are a nice blueish and amber color but don't think they glow. what speeds are you doing and for how long and load on the bike like weight and hill/mountains as the engine will get to upper limits of heat real fast when under load.

My right does glow sometimes and I notice it at night especially after heat build up from sitting at idle and then riding. You may want to check your valve clearances to make sure there not too tight. I set mine at .004 and the heads torqued at 36 lbs. Check with a stone cold engine.

Check plugs. Color will tell if lean.

Spray WD40 on compliance fittings (rubber intake manifolds) to see if idle changes. If it does, you have an air leak.

Check your timing. You might have two thing in play since both sides glow.

I'm with THe above. I'd check valve settings and also look for an air leak at the compliance fittings. A crack in the branch pipe shouldn't cause it to run lean but a leaking comp fitting certainly will. The comp fittings are a wear item and go bad occasionally. The rubber gets old and cracks/leaks and will cause a serious lean condition. Do a close visual inspection. Bad cracks will be obvious and small leaks can be noticed spraying the fitting at idle with carb cleaner, starting fluid etc. (RPM's will increase). What year you dealing with? On the other hand a slight glow at night can be normal. Glowing in the day light is not and needs to be addressed ASAP.

Gray hair abounds here. That's why it is a good idea to put your rig in the signature block.

Guilty.
Anyway on a 2010 the compliance fittings would be highly suspect.

By spray wd40 you mean on the fitting it self outside or spraying it inside a certain area please specify

Carb are out of sync. Or I've. Seen one float stuck shut and only one jug was working. The working side glowed cherry red taking up all the slack.

I sync'd the carbs, the right bogs when you give it some acceleration if the valve and timing checks out Ill tear the carb apart. I did take the float bowl to clean it and it was pretty clean inside. Some times the right does turn red but thats when the left is flaming cherry hot.

Onto the outsides, while engine is idling, the idea is the liquid "blocks" any cracks or loose joints which changes the inlet port pressure, aka vacuum.

HTH

When you say you see the pipes glowing, do you mean while actually moving, or only when stationary? I ask because I have heard of header pipes glowing a bit red at stationary idle after a run, but if the bike is moving forward at speed, that doesn't seem right no.
