Head light - running lights issue

Woe unto you that bought the first model year of a major remake, perhaps this section can help address any 2014 and later model Ural "imperfections". Here's a special section for folks with the latest rigs to discuss 2014 and later model-related topics such fuel injection, 3-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic steering dampers, spin-on oil filters and other anomalies that don't belong on true Russsian motorcycle ;-P We've gone from using big hammers and greasy wrenches to needing computers and Ouija boards in order to fix our rigs.

Head light - running lights issue

Postby Swampdoc » Fri May 11, 2018 3:00 pm

Hi Guys. I have a 2016 Patrol, and I just started having a weird issue that I can't figure out. On Monday, I noticed when I turned the key to "ON", the headlights, running lights, and speedometer light were not working. The bike still started and ran fine, but no lights. In the "ACC" position, I have full running lights. In the "ON" position, the brake lights still function when the brake is on, but as I mentioned, no running lights. I checked all the fuses, and they were fine. Checked for corrosion on the fuse box, it was fine. Decided maybe it was an ignition switch because the lights all lit up on ACC, so I ordered a new ignition switch. Put the new ignition switch in this morning, and the problem is still there. I've checked all of the connections in the rat's nest behind the head light. I pulled the headlight bulb, and it does not appear to be burned out. Any ideas?

You may want to check in the right handlebar switch assembly. There is a "disabled " headlight switch in the assembly. The bikes sold in Europe can turn the lights off, US law requires the switch to be disabled. The switch is turned on and the button is cut off and cover is placed over the opening.

Yeah. What Dan said. I had the same problem. Twice. Turned out to be a burned wire in the harness.

No we can't - it's same as yours.

Well I can only cos I added an extra switch to kill the headlight. :D

"In the "ACC" position, I have full running lights. In the "ON" position, the brake lights still function when the brake is on, but as I mentioned, no running lights."

In park mode the current goes thru a different part of the ignition switch, direct battery live to yellow wires, but that proves lamps and lighting fuse is OK, so I suspect bad connector(s) in the other path, starting with grey wire I think.

Don't forget fuse box has two in and out 1/4" blade connectors for each fuse, then goes thru a multi-pin plug block, TWICE. Then the handlebar's 9 pin block, and again the current goes thru it twice, up and back again. Lots of contacts to go wrong.

You betcha. :D

But many foreign bikes have been like this for a while so we've had time to get used to it.
