2011 ural timing adjustment?

Postby Nuttymopar » Fri Apr 29, 2011 3:19 pm

I have taken off the little black plug, aligned up the 1st mark with the center mark. I take of the front cover and see that stuff. But I DO NOT see any marks on the block or anything. How would one go about checking the timing on this? I can see where you can loosen the 2 set screws and slightly rotate it but can not see any marks that it should be aligned against?
Mostly want to check as I think my bike was built on a late friday afternoon after vodka meeting.

500 k checkup, I noticed right exhaust head bolt, finger loose and block was stripped. I have heli coiled that and finally got the valves adjusted properly.
Went to install carb jetting kit and noticed left carb 40/125 jets, right carb 40/122 jets. So now both are the same 45/130 jets. But then noticed the Idle/Mixture screw was out 2.5 - 3 full turns on both carbs, adjusted back to proper 1.5 turns. Spark plugs were black with carbon and this explains why. So now waiting for TwinMax to come in the mail to sync carbs. So this is why I figured I would check the timing also but can not see anything to time against.

Thanks.

You need to order a timing light too ;-)

Have timing light from older days. Where do you use the timing light on? Just flash to the hole in the block and make sure little arrow is within the center?

What BillyG means is that you need a timing light for the newer bikes with the Ducati ignition system. Your old static timing light ("Light on/light off") doesn't work on them. You set the timing with the engine running.

I'll check later this week to see if it does have advance on it or not. Really my brothers that live with us. Haven't looked at it in a few years.

So you just point it at the viewing hole and mark should be in the middle. if not, adjust either up or down using the set screws.

Thanks.

Yes, just loosen the set screws enough to move the base plate and turn it slowly CW or CCW to center the arrow with the dot at the shaft end in the window while using the strobe. The arrow with no dot is for valve adj./TDC. It goes faster if you have a helper at one end or the other.

Use a punch or scribe to mark your starting position just in case Ivan was still able to still see straight and got it right!

There are 2 marks on the flywheel they are 4 degrees apart, on the center edge of the block hole is a mark. factory is 4 degree setting -if you moved it to 6 it wouldn't hurt.

Now 125 with a 45 low is a good winter jet, summer you might want 125, 42. Unless you have glass packs that 130 is way to rich - causing happy shifting. factory is 122/40 old factory 40/125

Your not saying if your needel [main]is shimmed, some may have 3 or 4 shims. ural put 1 shim in during the last 2 years. Richer jets make it sound like it runs better at idel and cold, but it hurts the hill climb and shift power.
happy shifting- unless you realy don't want to.
TEST EVERYTHING 1ST,2ND,3RD,recomend it 4TH. YES IM A URAL DEALER !!! !

I checked with the timing light and that top mark seemed to be in the middle or very close to it. I do plan on pulling the front covre and moving it a little to see if it runs any better or not, just didn't want to do it at 10:30 pm after a FULL day at work.

Thanks to all.
